Two bombs found in Girardville apartment Wednesday, closing Main St. for hours

GIRARDVILLE – Two bombs were found in a West Main Street apartment here Wednesday afternoon, prompting the closure and evacuation of the unit block for hours.

Girardville Police Patrolman Brandon Gonzalez said he was called around 3pm to an apartment in the unit block of West Main Street for a report of a bomb found.

State Police Lt. Raymond O’Donnell, commander of the Criminal Investigation Section for Troop L, said at the scene that the property owner was renovating the building and preparing it for new tenants when he found a suspicious package.

The State Police bomb squad was called in from Hershey, along with the Girardville Fire Department, and the unit block of West Main was evacuated.

O’Donnell said the package was x-rayed and determined to be an explosive device, which they safely detonated. In a search of the home, another device was found, which was also safely detonated.

O’Donnell said that there had been numerous residents in the home over the past few years, and State Police are investigating and exploring all leads.

A bomb technician from the Federal Bureau of Investigation was also on scene Thursday to assist.

West Main Street was closed during the investigation until around midnight.
