TURKEY RUN – Flames engulfed much of a vacant home in this section of Shenandoah borough early Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called to 301 Furnace Street just before 3am for a reported house fire.

Weather conditions created a challenge for firefighters as the nearest fire hydrant, outside the Defender firehouse across the street, was frozen. Crews secured water from a block away.

Shenandoah Fire Chief Rick Examitas said a second alarm was struck for manpower. In addition to crews from Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, and Frackville, the second alarm brought firefighters from Shenandoah Heights, Girardville, Ringtown, and Pottsville.

Examitas said no injuries were reported and that the home at 301 was vacant. He said the fire is under investigation.

The fire is the second in a week to destroy a vacant home in town. Early Thursday morning, a home on the east end burned in a fire which officials say was intentionally set.
