Truck downs wires, pole, garage in Tamaqua

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - What remains of a garage at Bowe and Race Streets in Tamaqua after it was struck by a tractor trailer.

TAMAQUA – A tractor trailer caused quite a mess in the South Ward section of this borough Monday night.

Fire officials said the tractor trailer made a delivery at the Tamaqua Family Dollar, Spruce and Center Streets, and somehow found its way atop Stadium Hill and onto Race Street.

The truck came down the hill via Race Street, taking down several low hanging telephone wires along the way.

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL – Damage to a tractor trailer is evident after it struck a garage and a utility pole.

At the bottom of Race Street, the truck attempted to make a left turn onto Bowe Street, striking and downing a section of a garage, and damaging a parked car, with its trailer.

It continued on Bowe for one block, turning right onto Spruce Street, striking and downing a utility pole.

The truck stopped a block away in the area of Spruce and Cherry with significant damage to its trailer.

Fire officials said streets in the area of the downed utility pole and garage would be closed by the borough for a time, until the pole is repaired and the garage is demolished.

PPL Electric Utilities crews were on site late Monday to inspect the damage and begin repairs.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Tamaqua’s Citizens and South Ward fire companies responded to the incident along with Tamaqua Police.
