FRACKVILLE – A popular place for shooting hoops in the mountain city is getting new rims, thanks to a scholarship group whose roots are firmly in northern Schuylkill basketball.

Greg Stanalonis Jr. presented two rims to the borough Monday night on behalf of the scholarship organization established in memory of his father, Greg Stanalonis Sr.

Stanalonis Sr. was a longtime referee for local youth and school basketball leagues, and this year will mark the fifth year for a basketball tournament in his honor.

That tournament raises money for the scholarship fund, which is awarded to a high school senior from the Schuylkill County area who played two years of varsity basketball.

The rims will be installed at the Arch Street playground, where the tournament is held.

Stanalonis Jr. said applications remain open for the scholarship and that they have received less than 20 entries.

“If you know a kid who graduated in 2023, played two years of basketball, and lives in Schuylkill County, have them apply for the scholarship,” Stanalonis Jr. said.

Information can be found at their Facebook page.
