Police: Woman on phone strikes, downs utility pole on west end

SHENANDOAH – Distracted driving was to blame for a crash that downed a utility pole on the west end Sunday night, according to borough police at the scene.

The crash happened just after 9:00pm at West Washington and Pea Street, a small alleyway between Catherine and Vine Streets.

Police at the scene said a woman, whose identity was not released, was headed westbound on Washington Street in a Hyundai Kona SUV when she struck and downed a utility pole and stop sign.

Officers said she was on her phone at the time and that distracted driving was to blame for the crash.

The woman walked away from the crash unharmed, though her vehicle had to be towed from the scene.

PPL Electric Utilities was contacted and expected to be at the scene in short order. Washington Street from Catherine to Vine is expected to be closed for the duration of the pole repair, police said.

Steve’s Towing removed the vehicle.

Assisting Shenandoah Police at the scene were the Rescue Hook and Ladder and Columbia Hose fire companies.
