SHENANDOAH – Thirty-eight years ago today, a Shenandoah Heights man working for PennDOT was killed in the line-of-duty, and the state agency took time Monday to remember him.

Walter Skubel lived in the 200 block of Florida Avenue in 1986 when he was working for PennDOT on Interstate 81 north of Frackville.

He was cutting and stacking brush when a tractor trailer lost control.

“We pray this kind of heartbreak stays far removed from our PennDOT team,” PennDOT wrote in a Facebook post. “Please keep him in your thoughts and stay safe every workday.”

Skubel was a World War II veteran, serving in the Air Force.

Since 1970, 90 PennDOT workers lost their lives in the line of duty.

Along with remembrances like Monday’s, a statewide memorial was built in Harrisburg and a roving memorial travels the state.
