North Schuylkill brings home award in ‘What’s So Cool About Manufacturing’ contest

READING – Some local middle schoolers brought home hardware from Berks County as part of the What’s So Cool About Manufacturing contest.

Middle schoolers from 33 schools across Schuylkill and Berks counties visited local manufacturers and produced two-minute videos highlighting what they do. Videos were judged for various awards and competed for the Viewer’s Choice award, voted on by nearly 180,000 website visitors.

Locally, Shenandoah Valley, Mahanoy Area, and North Schuylkill all took part and an awards ceremony was held Tuesday evening in Reading.

North Schuylkill, spotlighting EMD Electronics, won the award for Outstanding Educational Value.

“Ten years ago, we expanded the What’s So Cool contest to the Berks Schuylkill region,” says Karen Buck, Director, Workforce Initiatives at MRC. “We are thrilled to celebrate another strong season marked by enthusiastic participation and incredible community support. This year, 33 teams helped shine a spotlight on the many exciting career opportunities right here in our region. The level of student engagement and voting participation continues to demonstrate growing interest in the program. Great job, students!”

Two local businesses were also featured in award-winning entries. D.H.H. Lengel Middle School visited Mrs. T’s Pierogies here in Shenandoah, winning Outstanding Overall Program.

Pine Grove Area stopped by Blaschak Anthracite near Mahanoy City and won Outstanding Cool.
