Illegal fire pit on west end prompts fire dept. reminder on borough burn ban

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Shenandoah Fire Asst. Chief Joe Boris, center, looks over an illegal fire pit at a home at 423 West Lloyd Street on March 26, 2023.

SHENANDOAH – Open fires of any kind are not allowed in Shenandoah borough, the fire department reminds the public after an illegal trash fire on the west end.

Firefighters were called to a home at 423 West Lloyd Street for a smoke investigation around 5:45pm Sunday.

The residents at that home were burning trash in the backyard, with flames visible from Arlington Street and smoke visible from as far as Centre Street.

While burning trash is commonplace in rural areas, including the Ringtown Valley, it is prohibited in Shenandoah borough, as are any other open fires.

Additionally, dry, windy days like Sunday are bad days to burn trash or debris of any kind, as the likelihood the fire could get out-of-hand and spread is high. Firefighters at the scene Sunday said the fire rekindled with the windy conditions.

Shenandoah Fire officials remind residents of the borough that open fires of any kind in town are prohibited, and violations will result in a fine.
