SHENANDOAH – Shenandoah Borough Council is exploring what is required to change a traffic pattern on the west end to alleviate one of the top three crash-ridden intersections in town.

Solicitor Shane Hobbs provided an update at Monday night’s council meeting.

Council, at the request of Councilman Joe Gawrylik, is considering making Gilbert Street a one-way street for two blocks north and south of Centre Street. North Gilbert would be a northbound one-way to Lloyd, and South Gilbert would be a southbound one-way to Oak.

He suggested council include the change in an upcoming ordinance to standardize parking distances at crosswalks and corners.

“It’s cheaper if we can put it all in one for advertising purposes,” Hobbs said.

Councilwoman Katie Catizone said she had previously worked on the effort and requested a crash report for Centre Street from the Schuylkill County Communications Center, which has not yet been received.

“Centre Street is a state road, and I felt like I needed to file paperwork with the state in order to change directions of the road,” Catizone said.

“If any portion of this touches a state road, we may have to involve PennDOT for some sort of approval process,” Hobbs said.

Council Vice President Mike “Zeckie” Uholik and Catizone agreed action was necessary at the intersection.

Hobbs said the next steps would be for him to explore what approval is necessary from PennDOT.

The intersection of Gilbert and Centre Streets has been the site of numerous crashes over the years and has the third highest number of crashes in a ten year period in the borough, behind Main and Centre and the entrance to the Gold Star Plaza.
