HS FOOTBALL: Mt. Carmel takes down Wyalusing in District 4 playoffs, 43-21; SCA rematch set

MOUNT CARMEL – The Red Tornadoes are moving on in the playoffs and a rematch is set against a regional foe.

The Mount Carmel squad entered Saturday’s game with an 8-2 record, hosting the 6-4 Rams of Wyalusing.

Wyalusing’s defense came out swinging with an onside kick on the opening kickoff. The Rams couldn’t get anything done on the ensuing drive, making it deep into the red zone before turning it over on downs.

Backed up in the shadow of their own goalposts, Mount Carmel was held to a three-and-out and the ensuing punt was blocked for a safety, giving Wyalusing a 2-0 advantage with just over 7 minutes left in the first quarter.

That was the only lead the Rams would have Saturday afternoon at the Silver Bowl.

Later in the quarter, Mount Carmel’s Al Bailey would break off a 74-yard run to the house, giving the Red Tornadoes a 7-2 lead.

A few minutes later, an interception set up a Cole Spears to Jacob Schultz pass for a long touchdown, extending Mount Carmel’s lead.

By halftime, Mount Carmel amassed a 22-8 advantage, which would be extended to 36-8 early in the 4th quarter.

Wyalusing wasn’t giving up, though, with an Ayden Hunsinger run closing the gap to 36-15. Cue a 76-yard pass from Spears to Schultz as Mount Carmel’s answer.

The Rams would score again late, but fall 43-21.

Mount Carmel improves to 9-2 and will be on the road next Friday, facing a 10-1 Southern Columbia squad whose lone loss was to the Red Tornadoes.
