Fire damages seven Mahanoy homes

MAHANOY CITY – Seven homes suffered some sort of fire, smoke, or water damage after a three alarm blaze here Saturday night.

Fire crews were called just before 7:00pm to the 700 block of East Pine Streets for reports of a house fire.

Arriving units found smoke coming from the eaves of several row homes on the Pine Street side, with heavy fire on the Market Street side of the homes.

Three alarms were struck, bringing manpower to the scene from as far as Hazle Township, Pottsville, and Minersville.

“The fortunate thing was, this was on a Saturday night when guys are around,” Chief Dan Markiewicz told the Sentinel. “Thank God everybody was around and we got manpower here quick.”

Markiewicz said his crews were able to keep the fire from running the length of the row, though seven homes in total suffered some sort of damage, from 723 East Pine to 735 East Pine.

He believes the fire started in 731 East Pine, and a State Police fire marshal has been called in to investigate.

Two homes in the damaged set were unoccupied — 729 and 727 — and the residents of the remainder are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Fire crews from Shenandoah, Tamaqua, Girardville, Frackville, Englewood, Altamont, Hazle Township, Pottsville, Minersville, and more responded to the scene along with Shenandoah and Ashland Ambulance.

Crews remained on the scene until about 9:30pm.

No injuries were reported.
