Driver downs street light, parking meters in Ashland

ASHLAND – A driver is in police custody after he downed a street light, several parking meters, and a decorative tree in a path of destruction in downtown Ashland late Friday night.

The incident happened around 11pm across several blocks of Centre Street from the Penn Jersey Food Mart up to Subway.

At least one street light was completely taken down and another was seen severely leaning.

A Subaru Legacy drove onto the sidewalk, taking down the pole and several parking meters.

Ashland firefighters responded to direct traffic and clean up debris at the scene, as glass was scattered across a wide area of Centre Street.

The vehicle came to a stop with heavy front-end damage at the Turkey Hill at 17th and Centre, 10 blocks away from the scene, where the driver was arrested by State Police.

PPL Electric Utilities arrived on scene around 11:30pm and began work to upright the poles.

State Police are investigating and no injuries were reported.
