Building collapses in downtown Mahanoy City

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - The scene of Wednesday's collapse in Mahanoy City.

MAHANOY CITY – No one was hurt when a vacant building collapsed into the sidewalk on East Centre Street in downtown Mahanoy City Wednesday.

The collapse happened some time around 11:30am at 26 East Centre Street.

Bill Killian, Code Enforcement Officer, said the property has been known to the borough for awhile for code issues, and the owner, Tonya Stanford, had been cited numerous times and a criminal warrant was issued as well.

“She’s nowhere to be found,” Killian said.

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL – Danger tape is wrapped around the collapse scene.

Stanford’s address on the Schuylkill County Parcel Locator is a PO Box in Cheltenham, near Philadelphia.

The building next door at 28 East Centre was knocked down a few years ago as part of the borough’s demolition program, and the building at 24 East Centre suffered a collapse not long ago as well.

Killian said a demolition contractor was en route to the site at midday Wednesday to provide an estimate for the demolition and removal of the debris.

Until then, the sidewalk in the area will be roped off.
