Car strikes Dollar General sign in Mahanoy; two injured
MAHANOY CITY – Two people were taken to local hospitals — one via air medical — after a sedan struck the Dollar General sign here early Thursday morning.
The crash happened around 3:00am at the dollar store at Centre and D Streets in Mahanoy City.
Police at the scene said the sedan, a Chevy Cobalt, was travelling south on D Street from Railroad Street, headed towards Centre Street, when it jumped the curb and struck the store’s sign.
The engine compartment of the sedan wrapped around the base of the sign.
Both the driver and passenger of the vehicle were injured, and were tended to by firefighters from Mahanoy City’s West End Fire Co. and medical personnel from Shenandoah and Ashland.
The driver was taken by Ashland via ground to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Schuylkill – East Norwegian Street in Pottsville, while the passenger was taken by Shenandoah to an awaiting Lehigh Valley MedEvac helicopter at the Shenandoah Helipad.
The passenger was then flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
