Walk for Ukraine planned this weekend

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL FILE - Parishioners from St. Mary's in McAdoo and St. Michael's in Shenandoah walk through downtown Shenandoah on their way to McAdoo in the 2023 edition of the Walk for Ukraine.

McADOO – Ukrainian Catholic faithful will walk in the footsteps of their ancestors next weekend to raise awareness and funds for Ukraine.

Beginning at 8am on Saturday, Nov. 22, parishioners from St. Mary’s in McAdoo will walk to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Shenandoah.

The effort follows in the footsteps of the earliest Ukrainian Catholic settlers in the coalfields, as the church in Shenandoah was the first of its kind in the United States.

Parishioners in McAdoo would walk to Shenandoah until they could establish their own parish.

The effort, organizers say, is to keep Ukraine top of mind and in the prayers of the public and to help raise funds for the Archeparchy’s Humanitarian Relief Efforts.

Archpriest and Dean Mark Fesniak will offer a blessing in McAdoo at 8am to start the walk and Rev. Bohdan Vasyliv will receive the walkers in Shenandoah at 2pm with an arrival blessing.

They will be escorted by a safety vehicle along the route, which uses the Lofty Road in Delano and picks up Route 54 in Mahanoy City to Shenandoah.

A stop is planned in downtown Mahanoy City for refreshments, a recitation of the Prayer for Ukraine, and prayerful singing.
