Township supervisor highlights scholarship opportunity for high schoolers
NUREMBERG – A North Union Township supervisor at Monday night’s meeting highlighted a scholarship opportunity open to high schoolers in any second class township in the state.
Bryan Flaim told those in attendance at the meeting of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS) Scholarship Program.
It offers four $1,500 scholarships — two for local government achievement and two for academic achievement — to high school juniors and seniors who live in a second class township and plan to attend post-secondary schooling in the fall.
Flaim said it would be nice to see a local student receive one of the scholarships.
Applicants must attend at least one township meeting and submit an application, personal accomplishments, two letters of recommendation including one from a township supervisor and an essay on either local government achievement or academic achievement.
For more information and to apply, visit PSATS’ website.
Every township in the Sentinel‘s coverage area is a second class township, including West Mahanoy, Mahanoy, Union, East Union, North Union, Butler, and Conyngham. Boroughs are not eligible.
In other business, township supervisors said they are continuing to cooperate with East Union Township in moving towards a regional comprehensive plan.
The matter was first raised in April and was brought up Monday night by a citizen.
Supervisors also discussed a letter received by the Nuremberg-Weston Volunteer Fire Co. regarding budgetary challenges and the contributions North Union and Black Creek Township make towards the fire company.
