SHENANDOAH – Tuesday is the first day of the two-day Safe Routes to Parks workshop in Shenandoah.

The first session will be at 5:30pm at Borough Hall, introducing community members and leaders to the program.

“This session will provide an overview of Safe Routes to Parks and start to look at goals and action steps,” Mandy Fitzpatrick, executive director of Schuylkill County’s VISION said in an email.

Shenandoah is one of four Safe Routes to Parks Activating Communities in the state, and as part of the program, VISION said, Shenandoah will receive training and coaching from the Safe Routes Partnership “to develop an action plan for improving active travel to local parks and green spaces and implement early actions from the plan.”

Wednesday will be a full-day workshop beginning at 9am at borough hall.

“Day two will further provide Shenandoah and the steering committee with the tools and resources to make sustainable changes to the borough to make parks and playgrounds accessible for all,” Fitzpatrick said in the email. “There will be water, coffee, and snacks in the morning, and lunch provided.  And again, wear or bring comfy shoes.”

“The purpose of this second session is to take an asset-oriented approach to identify community strengths and opportunities to build on and begin to identify shared aspirations and results for Shenandoah’s Safe Routes to Parks plan,” the agenda says. That session will include a walk-audit, about a half-mile walk from borough hall.

There will be a one-hour lunch break at noon followed by the third and final session from 1pm to 3:30pm at borough hall.

“The purpose of this session is to begin to identify steps to implement priority goals and actions, which may include conversations like timelines, logistics, partner roles, and resources,” the agenda reads.

A steering committee will also be formed, including Safe Routes, VISION, the borough, and a few community members. That committee will meet Tuesday morning.
