YOUTH FOOTBALL: Diamonds headed to championship; Devils fall in semis
TAMAQUA – One of our local teams will be playing for the Tri-County Youth Football League championship next week in Hazleton.
The west division champion Ashland Black Diamonds Mini-B team continued their undefeated season Sunday as they faced Blue Mountain in the league semifinals.
The game was played at Tamaqua and was a rematch of a regular season game, in which the Black Diamonds defeated the Eagles 12-0.
Ashland took a higher score into the half in Sunday’s game, leading 14-0 at the break.
A powerful offense elevated the Diamonds to a 28-14 victory, as Blue Mountain scored twice late in the game. Ashland improved to 10-0 and will face Schuylkill Haven in the B-Team championship. That game will be held at Harman-Geist Stadium in Hazleton next Sunday at noon.
On the Mini-A side, the north division champion Shenandoah Jr. Blue Devils faced east champion Tamaqua in the semifinal.
Tamaqua took control of the game early, thanks in part to strong running by #9.
By the halftime break, the Raiders led 24-0.
In the end, Tamaqua held Shenandoah scoreless to take the 40-0 victory.
The Raiders will face Lehighton in the A-Team title game, immediately following the B-Team title game.
