West Mahanoy retroactively hires police officer, approves transfer of liquor license

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – A former Shenandoah police officer didn’t move far away, and an auto museum owned by the Rich family of companies will soon have a liquor license.

Those approvals came at West Mahanoy Township’s regular meeting Tuesday night and a special hearing preceding it.

Supervisors unanimously approved the hiring of Mark Hysock as a full-time police officer, retroactive to Jan. 22 at a rate of $25.51 per hour.

MICQUELYNN KAPUSCHINSKY / SPECIAL TO SHENANDOAH SENTINEL – Shenandoah Police Patrolman Mark Hysock, left, is presented a certificate of appreciation from West Mahanoy Township Supervisors Chairman Paul “Pepper” Martin in January.

Hysock was previously a Shenandoah police officer until his resignation last month.

In other business, township supervisors considered a request from Auto Museum, LLC, a Jack Rich company, to transfer a liquor license into the township to the JWR Auto Museum on Eleanor Road.

Attorney Tom Campion, representing the applicant, told the board that the intent “is merely only to have the occasional special event or fundraiser there, and [John Rich will] open it the minimum number of hours required by the PLCB to keep the license current.”

The auto museum began as the personal collection of John “Jack” Rich, Sr., former CEO of Reading Anthracite, Gilberton Coal, Jack Rich Inc., among others in the Rich family of companies.

No one at the hearing voice opposition, and supervisors approved the transfer 2-0. Supervisor Tony Gladski abstained.

In other business, supervisors heard a complaint from a resident regarding oversize trucks in Shenandoah Heights.

Another resident expressed his thanks to Aqua, Pennsylvania, which he said helped plow Schuylkill Avenue and Raven Run Road in a recent snowstorm.

Additionally, supervisors approved:

  • a resolution to appoint sewage enforcement officers;
  • the hiring of Matthew Bauer as a part-time road worker;
  • the appointment of Joseph Redding, Altamont, to the zoning board;
  • the appointment of Russell Motsko, Altamont, to the planning commission;
  • the resignation of a road crew employee effective Feb. 15;
  • advertising for a full-time road worker with a CDL.
