Weather causes power outages across region, postpones SV football game

SHENANDOAH – Thunderstorms blowing through our region dropped pea size hail here and caused power outages to the north and south and cancelling the Shenandoah Valley football game at Minersville.

The storms spawned special weather statements and severe thunderstorm warnings through Thursday afternoon while prompting fire calls for trees down in West Mahanoy Township and Union Township.

As of 4:30pm, more than 600 PPL customers were without power in Gordon and the Fountain Springs area of Butler Township. Restoration is expected by 9:30pm.

To our north, about 450 customers in the Mountain Grove area are without power. PPL expects to have repairs done there by midnight.

The Minersville area was hit especially hard, with about 5,500 customers without power in the entirety of Minersville as well as Mar Lin, Llewellyn, Branchdale, Forestville, Primrose, Seltzer, and the Irish Valley.

Shenandoah Valley football was set to travel to Minersville to face the Battlin’ Miners at their stadium at 7pm Thursday.

That game has been postponed until Sunday at 3pm.

Around 4:30pm, the Schuylkill County Communications Center directed all fire and EMS stations to be manned until further notice, indicating the 911 system in the county was down.
