PEL seeking questions from public regarding potential MABS sale

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL FILE – The Municipal Authority of the Borough of Shenandoah office and treatment plant in Raven Run.

SHENANDOAH – The Pennsylvania Economy League, the organization working with the borough on the propose sale of the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Shenandoah, is seeking questions from the public regarding the sale.

PEL has set up an email address — [email protected] — to gather questions from the general public, the answers to which will be published on the Sentinel’s website.

The request for questions are part of the ongoing effort to gather public input and feedback, which also includes a pair of public hearings, scheduled for Oct. 19 and Oct. 26 at 7:00pm. The location has yet to be determined.

The borough is looking at selling the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Shenandoah for around $12 Million to Aqua Pennsylvania, a private water company based in the Philadelphia area.

Shenandoah has controlled water distribution in the borough, as well as the northern half of West Mahanoy Township and the Rappahannock and Connerton sections of Butler Township, since the early 1940’s, when the borough formed MABS and took over the Citizens Water and Gas Company and the Girard Water Company.

The two systems, in some parts of the borough, ran concurrent to each other, and still do to this day in some cases. Evidence of this is shown in the existence of water main covers marked “Citizens” for the Citizens Water Company.

Aqua Pennsylvania, via its Roaring Creek Division, currently services Girardville and the majority of lower Northumberland County, including Mount Carmel, Kulpmont, and Shamokin.
