Icy conditions cause numerous crashes in northern Schuylkill Tuesday morning

ARISTES – Icy conditions contributed to multiple crashes across the region Tuesday morning.

State troopers reported information from two crashes, one on Interstate 81 in Delano Township and another in the Ringtown Valley.

The crash in the valley happened around 6:30am on Aristes Road near Hill Field Road.

Joseph Santos, 30, of Shenandoah, was headed west on Aristes Road when troopers from the Frackville barracks say he lost control of his 1998 Chevrolet Blazer, striking a tree.

The vehicle was disabled, troopers said, and towed by D&B Towing.

Santos was not injured, though troopers said he would be cited for the crash.

An hour later, troopers said another crash happened around 7:40am on Interstate 81 Southbound near the Lofty Road overpass.

Troopers said Zachary Stoneroad, 22, of Halifax, was headed southbound on Interstate 81 in a 2002 Ford Excursion.

He lost control on a sheet of ice due to freezing rain, travelling off the highway and into an embankment.

Stoneroad was not injured.

Several other crashes were reported in the area Tuesday morning both locally and regionally.

The Gold Star Highway between Shenandoah and Frackville was closed for much of Tuesday morning as a result.
