Heights fire remains under investigation; child saved by borough PD still in hospital

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – A fire in this West Mahanoy Township village where a Shenandoah police officer rescued a toddler remains under investigation, State Police at Frackville said in a release Sunday.

Trooper Joseph Hall said the fire began in the front bedroom on the third floor of 260 Indiana Avenue around midday Friday.

First responders were called to the scene around noon and one of the first to arrive was Patrolman Mark Hysock of the Shenandoah Borough Police Department.

Hysock, troopers said, made his way into the building, onto the third floor, and crawled down a smoke-filled hallway to the fire room where an 18-month-old child was still located.

He secured the child and brought them out of the house to awaiting Shenandoah paramedics.

The child was then taken to the Shenandoah helipad and flown to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest, where they remain under treatment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, troopers said.
