Gilberton loses leader, Mary Lou Hannon

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Gilberton Mayor Mary Lou Hannon speaks at a town hall meeting at the Continental Hose Co. on June 15, 2020.

GILBERTON – This small borough has lost its steadfast leader.

Mary Lou Hannon passed away overnight Wednesday.

A longtime borough official, serving both on council as president for a time, as well as mayor, Hannon led the small borough of about 800 through several large-scale issues, including the Flood of ’06 and this June’s flooding.

Shenandoah Mayor Andrew J. Szczyglak posted a statement on behalf of the borough to his Facebook page, describing Hannon as “a very dear friend to me.”

“She loved her community of Gilberton and the People she served. She had a Heart Of Gold,” Szczyglak wrote. “On behalf of the Borough of Shenandoah we would like to extend our Sincere Sympathy to the entire Hannon Family and assure you of our Prayers at this difficult time.”

Girardville Mayor Michael Zangari described Hannon’s death as “a big loss for [Gilberton.]”
