CENTRALIA, Columbia County – Volunteers will once again visit this southern Columbia County borough to clean up the mess left behind by dumpers this year.

The 7th annual Centralia Clean-Up, hosted by the Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation (EPCAMR), will be held on Oct. 17.

COVID-19-related precautions will be taken, according to the event’s Facebook page, including social distancing, masks, and hand sanitizer.

They estimate about 50 people can handle the task this year, and, as a COVID-related precaution, they cannot gather over 100 people.

“We will be able to spread out accordingly. We ask that people who do decide to volunteer are healthy and have not knowingly have come in contact within anyone who has tested positive for COVID,” EPCAMR writes in the event page.

The clean-up focuses on Centralia borough and the Byrnesville section of Conyngham Township.

Last year, over 300 tires, a dozen TVs, at least 50 bags of spray paint cans, and over 50 cubic yards of trash were collected.

This year, it “is much better than it used to be,” according to EPCAMR.
