Funeral arrangements announced for Shenandoah-native priest

ALLENTOWN – The Diocese of Allentown announced funeral arrangements Sunday for Monsignor John Murphy, a Shenandoah native and longtime priest in the Lehigh Valley.

Murphy died on Friday. He was 86.

He was born and raised in Shenandoah, attending school at the former Annunciation and Shenandoah Catholic High before attending St. Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Monsignor Murphy’s first assignment was Parochial Vicar, Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, Allentown.

Monsignor Murphy was first named a Pastor at Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, Allentown.

In 1980, Monsignor Murphy was appointed Pastor, Saint Thomas More Parish, Allentown, and remained in that assignment until his retirement in June 2021.

A Mass of Christian Burial for will be celebrated at Saint Thomas More Church, 1040 Flexer Avenue, Allentown, on Saturday, January 6, at 11am by Bishop Alfred Schlert. Reverend Christopher S. Butera, Pastor, Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Bath, will be the Homilist.

Calling hours will be held at Saint Thomas More Parish on Friday, January 5 from 5pm to 7pm

A Vigil Service will be conducted at 7pm Monsignor Yenushosky, Vicar Forane, Lehigh Deanery will Preside. The Homilist will be Father Kweder.

Murphy will be buried at the Annunciation cemetery in Shenandoah Heights.
