SELTZER – A massive blaze destroyed two duplexes, damaged a firehouse, and killed a dog in this Norwegian Township village Wednesday afternoon.

Fire broke out in the 300 block of Main Street around 3:00pm.

Responding crews were told that someone was on the roof of one of the buildings.

Pottsville Fire Chief Jim Misstisshin told the Sentinel that no one was on the roof when he arrived.

Flames engulfed and destroyed the two duplexes from 318 to 312 Main Street. By the time firefighters arrived, flames had enveloped the rear of the homes.

At one point early in the firefight, some sort of firework or mortar exploded — at least one shell was seen exploding in the sky.

The Seltzer Hose Co. adjacent to 318 Main had extensive heat damage to the fire-facing side of the building, as well.

No injuries were reported in the blaze, though a dog perished in the fire.

State Police at Schuylkill Haven are investigating the blaze.
