Girardville to ask state for lower speed limits on Main, Mahanoy
GIRARDVILLE – Girardville Borough Council wants speed limits reduced to 25 miles per hour on the borough’s main thoroughfares.
Charlie Marquardt, council president, said he has contacted PennDOT to inquire about the “lengthy process.”
“There is paperwork to fill out and they need to do a traffic study,” Marquardt said.
Marquardt asked for a motion to proceed with the process, which was approved.
In the first public comment portion of the meeting, Main Street resident Joseph Chiaretti expressed support for the borough’s position.
“I think our police force would agree that most of the trucks that are going down Main Street are going faster than 40 miles per hour,” Chiaretti said. He said that the speed limit is not unusual through a built-up area, citing the speed limits in Mount Carmel, Mahanoy City, Nesquehoning, and Lehighton. Shenandoah does as well.
Chiaretti also suggested the borough look into prohibiting brake retarders or engine brakes on trucks through town.
In other business, council approved a resolution to receive a tax anticipation note for $45,000 from Mid Penn Bank and a motion to purchase two properties for demolition, 240 West Preston and 137 East Main.
