Child evaluated after culinary incident creates smoke condition
SHENANDOAH – A child was checked out by Shenandoah Ambulance personnel after a culinary incident filled their North Jardin Street house with smoke around 10:00pm Monday evening.
Shenandoah Fire Marshal Rick Examitas and his Phoenix Fire Company were at the firehouse at 17 North Jardin Street for the company’s meeting night.
“We just got done our meeting, they came knocking on the door and said they had a smell inside [at 12 North Jardin],” Examitas told the Sentinel. “We went over and you could smell something was burning.”
Examitas called the Schuylkill County Communications Center via radio to dispatch the rest of the department as the Phoenix crew pulled their engine out and started investigating.
Within minutes, fire crews from the Polish American, Rescue Hook and Ladder, and Columbia were on scene as well.
A smoke condition was evident in the first floor of the building as crews were inside, so windows were opened and ventilation fans were utilized.
Examitas said the cause of the smoke condition was a culinary incident, and that they brought a small child out of the residence, who was evaluated at the scene by ambulance personnel.
No one was injured to an extent requiring transportation to a hospital, Examitas said.
Crews were clear of the scene in about half an hour.
