Mahanoy City to apply for DCNR parks grant

MAHANOY CITY – Approved at borough council Tuesday evening was a resolution to apply for a Community Conservation Partnership Program, or C2P2, grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
“C2P2 is a program through DCNR for playgrounds. C2P2 money is going to be used for Kaier’s, it’s the program we did the 8th Street Park with, we were just awarded one for the East End Park, so it’s focused on playgrounds through DCNR,” said borough manager Dan Lynch.
According to Lynch, the specific details of the grant application, including its intended project, are still being worked out.
“We just wanted to get the resolution in, because the application is due April 11, the day after our next meeting,” said Lynch.
During the Community Development portion of Tuesday’s meeting, it was mentioned that the construction of Kaier’s Park is set to begin soon.
Also mentioned was the progress on the Hometown Hero banner program.
“We’ve had a very good response on our Hometown Hero banner program,” said Lynch.
“How many do we have?” asked council president Thom Maziekas.
“I’d say approximately 70. Closing in on it if not,” said Lynch. “Just to re-emphasize, it’s not due this Friday, we’re going to still keep taking applications, so I think once people see the initial ones go up, it’ll generate even more interest, so that’s looking good, and we’re getting ready to put in the park at Kaier’s, so things are moving along there as well.”
During the “Miscellaneous” portion of the meeting, council vice president Francis Burke noted “Mahanoy City Community Day will be underway July 14, 2018. If anybody wants to get involved, have a stand or get involved somehow, please come up to the borough and let us know.”
In other business, borough council
- Approved a change to the date of a food truck fundraiser at the West End Fire Company. The event will occur on July 28 from 10am to 7pm.
- Authorized the Mahanoy City Fire Department to conduct a boot drive Memorial Day Weekend.
- Appointed attorney Chester C. Corse as outside counsel for the Mahanoy City Civil Service Commission.
- Approved advertisement for bids for demolition of 217-219 East Centre Street, 608 West Centre Street, 46-48 South “B” Street, 216-218 West Spruce Street, and 512 West South Street.
- Approved restricted parking applications for 1315 East Market Street, 200 East Mahanoy Street, and 604 West Pine Street.
- Approved the installation of a new 3 phase electrical panel.
- Made LST tax distributions from 2017 available for bill reimbursement for the Mahanoy City Fire Department, $2,329.45 per company with $500 fire police reimbursement.
- Approved a request for Fire Police from the City of Pottsville for the 2018 Light Lager Jogger on April 21.
