State Police warn of emerging text scam

WEST HAZLETON – State troopers are warning of a developing text message scam folks should look out for.

According to the State Police at Hazleton, the text scam will claim your bank account has been compromised and to go to the bank and withdraw an undisclosed amount of money.

The text will also instruct you not to tell anyone at the bank why you are withdrawing the money.

Scammers will then provide a QR code and instructions to find a Bitcoin ATM and deposit the cash into the ATM. Once this is done, troopers said, your money is gone.

If you receive a phone call from a person requesting cash, credit card information, or payment through gift cards, hang up, troopers say. Additionally, if you receive text messages with a hyperlink, do not click on it.

Troopers also say that if someone offers a deal or tells you to pay them but don’t tell anyone, that is also a scam.

“Scams are unfortunately developing as technology advances,” troopers said. “Stay vigilant and if you are ever unsure, talk to someone about the scenario BEFORE you provide money, gifts or personal information.”
