North Schuylkill girl moving on to state National Civics Bee competition

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN – A local girl is headed to Harrisburg to represent our area in the Pennsylvania round of the National Civics Bee.

Mary A., a North Schuylkill girl, placed third in the Schuylkill County competition, hosted by the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce.

She was one of 18 elementary, middle, and junior high school students to compete. The top three finalists move on to Harrisburg.

Each finalist received a trophy, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Pottsville and created by ET Trophy Shop, along with cash prizes provided by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Hidden River Credit Union: $1,000 for first place, $500 for second, and $250 for third.

The evening event, hosted at Penn State Schuylkill in Schuylkill Haven, began with a pre-event gathering and catered dinner for all students provided by Hess Catering. Finalists competed using tablets donated by Walmart, which they were able to take home as a gift. Parents of participants received $20 gas gift cards courtesy of Onvo to help cover travel expenses.
