MOREA – The Schuylkill County Municipal Authority is receiving a hefty state grant to improve its water system in here.
They announced Monday an $8.2 Million grant and $230,757 low-interest loan from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) to upgrade the Morea Well Treatment Facility.
The project will provide a new deep well pump, iron/manganese treatment system, chemical fee applications, and two booster pumps to serve 120 homes in Morea.
This will also include new service lines and water meters.
“The Authority is profoundly grateful for the generous offer from PENNVEST for our Morea Well Project. This initiative will ensure a reliable source of public water and fire protection for the residents of the Village of Morea who have endured an unreliable and failing system for many years,” SCMA Executive Director Patrick M. Caulfield, P.E. said. “The innovative design will integrate seamlessly with our existing system, providing a shared supplemental water supply for the entire network. Residents of Morea will benefit from new water service lines that adhere to the Lead and Copper Rule.”
SCMA says the connection will also provide supplemental water to the Mount Laurel system, serving the two state prisons, federal prison, Highridge Industrial Park, Mahanoy Business Park, and New Boston.
“These projects showcase what can be accomplished through dedicated partnerships between state and local government officials,” said state Sen. David Argall, R-29.
“By providing funding for critical water infrastructure projects, we can ensure our local governments can improve essential services, enhance public health, and create long-term economic stability for residents and businesses alike,” State Rep. Dane Watro, R-116, said in a statement.
Construction is slated to begin in 2025.
The system was the former Morea Citizens Water Company.
