Borough police officer rescues child from burning Heights home

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – A child was airlifted to a regional medical center after a Shenandoah police officer rescued them from a fire in this West Mahanoy Township village Friday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the 200 block of Indiana Avenue for a house fire with possible entrapment around noon.

Shenandoah Police arrived shortly after dispatch and found a room-and-contents fire in the attic of 260 Indiana Avenue, Heights firefighters said.

Patrolman Mark Hysock entered the building and rescued an infant from the room. He declined to provide further comment, citing the fire investigation.

Heights Fire Chief Steven Quinn said two other children were injured and taken to local hospitals by Shenandoah Ambulance for treatment.

The infant was taken to the Shenandoah helipad to an awaiting MedEvac helicopter.

No other injuries were reported.

Fire damage, Quinn said, was contained to 260 Indiana Avenue, though the neighboring home at 262 had minor damage.

Responding to the scene were firefighters from Shenandoah Heights, William Penn, Altamont, Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, and Englewood, among others.
