PSP: Mahanoy Plane man fired shots at occupied house

MAHANOY PLANE – A man from this Gilberton section is in Schuylkill County Prison on $150,000 bail, accused of firing shots at someone’s house.

Patrick Quinn, 25, of 2432 Main Street, is facing six counts each of felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault and reckless endangerment for the incident.

In court filings, State Police Trooper Nicholas Reese said the incident happened around 12:30pm Sunday when troopers received reports of shots fired in the area of 2406 Railroad Street in Mahanoy Plane.

Troopers arrived to find that a vehicle had been struck by three rounds outside the home. Six people were inside the home at the time of the shooting, including two toddlers.

One of the residents told troopers that he saw two men south of the house near the railroad, one of whom was wielding a rifle. The victim yelled for the man to stop shooting and then “heard rounds traveling past his position.”

The two men then fled in a blue Dodge Dart.

As troopers were interviewing the victims, that vehicle passed by and was then located on West Main Street at Hickey Street in Mahanoy Plane.

The two occupants, Quinn and another man, were detained and the victim identified the two as the ones seen during the shooting.

Troopers read Quinn his Miranda rights and interviewed him, which Reese wrote that he was “initially deceptive with his account of the incident,” then admitting to being in the area with a .22 caliber rifle.

Quinn told troopers he was target shooting in the woods behind 2406 Railroad Street and that he fled the area and hid the weapon alongside the road nearby.

The other man told troopers that they were in the woodlands and Quinn was firing into hilly terrain. For no reason, the man said, Quinn turned around and started firing at 2406 Railroad Street and they fled when the residents came out yelling.

That man then led police to where the rifle was dumped, which was found near Vulcan in Mahanoy Township.

Quinn was arraigned Sunday by Magisterial District Judge Edward Tarantelli and committed to Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post $150,000 cash bail.

A preliminary hearing is set before Tarantelli on Feb. 28.
