MAHANOY CITY – Mahanoy City has a new secretary/treasurer, and will soon have a freshly paved borough hall parking lot, after both were approved at Tuesday’s borough council meeting, among a multitude of other items.

Angela Hughes was hired as the borough’s secretary treasurer at a salary of $25,000 per year. She vacates the position of zoning/police secretary, which council voted to advertise.

In other business, the borough will pay $3,000 to allow Clearwater Construction, Inc, of Mercer County, to repave a roughly 25′ by 30′ portion of the borough hall parking lot.

”PennDOT inspectors were up, and they denied for them to finish that spot, and Clearwater said, ‘well, we’re going to be up here for two more weeks. We’ll do it for $3,000,'” said council president Thom Maziekas, adding that if the company had to return to complete the project, it’d cost double that amount or more.

Half of the parking lot was repaved as part of the “bridge replacement” project ongoing on Market Street, which Clearwater was contracted by PennDOT to complete at a cost of $1.4 Million.

“This way, it’ll make a half decent parking lot out there,” said council vice president Francis Burke.

In other business, borough council:

  • Approved seeking two appraisals for the McCann property on Main Street, owned by the borough,
  • Approved changing workshop and meeting times to 6:00pm,
  • Approved ordering QuickBooks,
  • Approved a resolution adopting written procedures “governing how professional services are chosen for its pension plans,”
  • Approved Chilewski Enterprises for Kaier Park Phase II,
  • Approved Chilewski Enterprises for the East End Park project,
  • Approved customer/client parking for Amato’s Pizza.
