Lloyd George, Sr. appointed mayor in Gilberton
GILBERTON – Gilberton has a new mayor, following the resignation of Michael Van Allen.
Van Allen, appointed mayor in 2020 following the passing of Mary Lou Hannon, resigned at Thursday’s borough council meeting, effective immediately.
“I wish Gilberton all the very best,” Van Allen said, offering his assistance however possible moving forward. “I will do whatever I can, just give me a phone call.”
“My heart will always be with you all,” Van Allen added.
Borough Council accepted Van Allen’s resignation with regret, by a vote of 4-0.
Later, Councilman Barry Brassington raised a motion to appoint Councilman Lloyd George, Sr. as mayor, seconded by Frank Styka.
The motion was approved and George then submitted his resignation as a councilman. George will fill out the remainder of Van Allen’s term, which runs until 2025.
Council briefly discussed filling George’s council seat, eventually tabling the matter until next month. The borough has 30 days to fill the seat.
That seat is up for election this year.
In other business, council approved:
- A one year agreement for pump generator maintenance at a cost of $1,500;
- The use of Quality Hill Road by WMPI;
- The installation of a No Outlet sign in the Planefield section of the borough.
