Indiana company builds antenna at Heights cemetery

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - A new antenna in Shenandoah Heights, built by Horvath Communications.

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – This West Mahanoy Township village now has a second telecommunications tower, thanks to an Indiana company.

A little over a month ago, Horvath Communications, of South Bend, Indiana, built an 86-foot tall antenna at Odd Fellows Cemetery, according to Federal Communications Commission data.

The massive structure is visible from nearly every part of Shenandoah.

The tower is situated at the entrance to Odd Fellows Cemetery on Cemetery Road, and was built on Jan. 31, the company said in FCC filings.

The land, according to the Schuylkill Parcel Locator, is owned solely by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, which owns the cemetery.

According to the company’s website, Horvath owns hundreds of towers across the country, including three others in Schuylkill County — in Girardville, Donaldson, and Orwigsburg.

Horvath leases space on their towers to wireless carriers or other entities in need of antenna space.

It isn’t clear through FCC filings what the tower will be used for, though a Federal Aviation Administration study was sponsored last fall for the site by AT&T for a maintenance crane.

The tower is the second antenna in Shenandoah Heights, the first being the transmitter for radio station WAVT-FM, better known as T-102, at the top of Swatara Road.
