MINERSVILLE – A demolition project gone bad led to a building collapse and brief road closure Thursday in this borough.

The collapse happened around noon today in the 100 block of Sunbury Street.

Minersville Police Chief Michael Combs said the buildings at 117-119 Sunbury Street were owned by the Schuylkill County Land Bank and were in the process of being demolished.

Robert Gusick Demolition, of Shamokin, was handling the project, according to Schuylkill County Commissioners meeting minutes. The project was awarded at a cost of $32,812.

“Obviously, the demo went bad, so we shut this guy down, and the county now has somebody else coming up to fix this problem,” Combs told the Sentinel at the scene. “That’s where we’re at right now.”

The 100 block of Sunbury Street was closed to traffic for about an hour while barricades were brought in to surround the collapsed building.

No injuries were reported, and the neighboring barber shop at 121 had to close, but no damage was immediately reported.
