ASHLAND – Ashland’s police force will have two new officers soon, as council approved hiring a new full-time and part-time police officer at Wednesday’s meeting.

Borough council unanimously approved hiring Cody Zearfoss as a full-time officer and Daniel Sensi as a part-time officer.

“A motion to get another full-time police officer in the borough is well-needed,” Adam Bernodin, councilman, said, making the motion to hire Zearfoss.

Chief Gerald Daley thanked council for approving the hire.

Noting that some part-timers have left for other departments, Daley asked council to hire Sensi to make up for that. He’s been a police officer for four years now, Daley said.

Mayor Ray Walacavage asked where Sensi is from. Daley said Hershey.

“Hershey?” Walacavage asked.

“They’re all coming from out of the area. You can’t get anybody local anymore,” Daley said.

Bernodin motioned to hire Sensi, which was approved unanimously.

A resident asked Daley if the borough would have 24/7 police coverage once again.

“Not yet. We’re getting close, though, very close,” Daley said, noting that they will have three full-timers — himself, Daniel Weikel, and Zearfoss.

He said that departments are having difficulty finding officers to fill positions.

“It’s going to be better than it is now,” Daley said, referring to police coverage.
