Breaking down where Schuylkill’s recent coronavirus cases are
SHENANDOAH – Schuylkill County as a whole has added 187 cases in the past two weeks, prompting Governor Tom Wolf to label the county as an “area of concern,” according to Coal Region Canary.
The case increase since Sept. 21 is nearly double the increase from August 21 to Sept. 21 — 100 — in half the time.
The three counties neighboring northern Schuylkill have not experienced such a drastic increase in the past two weeks, in relation to the previous month. Northumberland County has added 247 cases since Sept. 21, nearly matching the 267 increase from Aug. 21 to Sept. 21.
Columbia County added 97 cases in the past two weeks, well under their Aug. 21 to Sept. 21 increase of 351.
Luzerne County added 167 cases in the past two weeks, about half of the Aug. 21 to Sept. 21 increase of 344.
Breaking the added cases down by ZIP Code shows that the vast majority of the new cases are not in the northern Schuylkill area.
In fact, only three of the new Schuylkill cases since Sept. 21 were from the Shenandoah – 17976 ZIP Code, which includes the borough and the northern half of West Mahanoy Township.
Of Schuylkill County’s 187 new cases, only about 46 are from the northern Schuylkill area — Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, Ashland, Frackville, Ringtown, Zion Grove, Barnesville, Girardville, Gilberton, Sheppton, and Delano.
Of the additional 247 cases in Northumberland County, only 18 are from the portion of the county we cover — Mount Carmel, Kulpmont, Marion Heights, and Locust Gap.
A further breakdown of the current case totals and the difference from Sept. 21 is below.
