West Mahanoy approves Girard Estate demo program

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – Once again this year, six homes in William Penn and Lost Creek will be brought down by the Girard Estate, West Mahanoy Township Supervisors said Tuesday.

Supervisors approved the 2020 Girard Estate Demolition Program at their regular meeting, held at the township building in Shenandoah Heights.

The six homes to be demolished are:

  • 532 Mount Olive Boulevard
  • 533 Mount Olive Boulevard
  • 519 Mount Olive Boulevard
  • 514 Mount Olive Boulevard
  • 491 Mount Olive Boulevard
  • 18 Upper Road

The program has been ongoing for about a decade, where Girard Estate covers the cost of demolition of the homes, which are on land leased from them.

The program generally covers the demolition of six vacant structures each year in the township.

In other business, supervisors approved advertising their 2020 road improvement projects for bids.

The projects under consideration would improve roadways in the Heights, William Penn, and Altamont, including Texas Avenue from Wyoming to Tioga, Indiana Avenue, Chelton Street, Upper Road, Chestnut Street from Wylam to Spencer, Lotus Alley from Chestnut to Willow, and Back Alley from Chestnut to Willow.

How many of the projects are undertaken depends upon the costs of the bids received, supervisors said.

In other business, supervisors:

  • Approved the hiring of a two part-time road crew members for the summer: Tyler Livergood and Brian Gilbert, at $10 per hour, not exceeding 30 hours a week
  • Approved advertising for a part-time clerk for the township office
  • Appointed Michael Michalik as chair of the bid opening committee for the road project.
