Domestic incident leads to SERT response in Barnesville

BARNESVILLE – A Barnesville man is in Schuylkill County Prison after police allege he attempted to stab multiple relatives and prompted a standoff over the weekend.

Kyle Merenda, 31, of Shady Lane, is facing felony aggravated assault and related charges filed by the State Police at Frackville.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Trooper Patrick McDonald, troopers were called to a home on Shady Lane in Ryan Township just before 4pm Saturday for a reported assault.

Troopers said an incident took place between Merenda and multiple family members in which he allegedly attempted to stab multiple family members.

Responding troopers formed a perimeter around the home and tried to hail Merenda out of the home. He responded by saying “No,” troopers said.

The State Police Special Emergency Response Team, their tactical team, was activated and responded to the scene.

Multiple family members reported that Merenda attempted to stab them when they attempted to get mail and a package from the home and were injured in the scuffle.

Eventually, Merenda surrendered and was taken to a Coaldale hospital for treatment.

He was later arraigned and committed to Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post $25,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is set for May 6.
