SHENANDOAH – The borough police force recently signed on to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement through the 287(g) program.

Shenandoah Borough Police signed a 287(g) agreement last week.

The program, authorized by a Jan. 2025 executive order, allows law enforcement agencies to enforce certain aspects of federal immigration law, according to a fact sheet distributed by ICE.

Shenandoah Borough Police signed the agreement through the Task Force Model, which ICE says allows officers to identify and report suspected illegal immigrants not charged with crimes and exercise limited immigration authority on ICE-led task forces.

Departments under the Task Force Model can receive $7,500 for equipment per trained task force officer, $100,000 for new vehicles, salary and benefits reimbursed per trained task force officer, and overtime funds for up to 25% of salary.

The Mahanoy Township Police Department also signed a 287(g) agreement recently. Mahanoy City Borough signed an agreement previously, as did the Schuylkill County Sheriff’s Office. The remaining Schuylkill County agency participating is Pine Grove Borough Police.

No agencies in Northumberland County signed an agreement. Benton Police in Columbia County and the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office both signed agreements.
