Ryan Township Rescue Squad offers old station to police force

BARNESVILLE – The Ryan Township Rescue Squad is offering its old quarters on Third Avenue in Barnesville to the township police force.

The matter was discussed at Monday night’s township supervisors meeting.

“I need one bay to put our dive trailer in,” Chief Mike Mistishen told township supervisors at the meeting. He offered the rest of the two-bay pole building to the township rent-free to use as a police station.

The building, he says, was built in the 1980’s and includes a larger office, a bathroom, and a bay to park the police cruiser, among other amenities.

It has been used for storage since the Rescue Squad moved down to new quarters at Barnesville Drive and Elm Avenue.

“My proposal is, I could let you have the building free of charge, no rent, no lease, for five years,” Mistishen said. “Just pay the utilities on it.”

He also asks that the township put a new shingle roof on it.

“You could change any inside locks you want, you could do anything you want with the building inside,” he said. “To me, it’s a win-win for both parties. I’d have somebody in that building. I’ll have security in that building. You’ll have a new location for the police department right off Route 54.”

Supervisors Chairman Clyde ‘Champ’ Holman called the proposal a “great idea” but said discussions would have to take place regarding the cost.

Currently, Ryan Township Police operates out of a small office inside the municipal building.

“I would rather do that and still own the building instead of getting rid of it,” Mistishen said, noting that he’d received inquiries from potential buyers.
