Spartans look to avenge ’24 District XI championship loss

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - North Schuylkill Head Coach Wally Hall introduces his team during Schuylkill County Football Coaches Association Media Day on July 30, 2025.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN – Last season, Northwestern Lehigh swept their meetings with North Schuylkill, once in the regular season and again in the district title game.

Head Coach Wally Hall, entering his 13th season at the helm of the Spartans, and returning quarterback Caden Mengel, both told the Sentinel the Sept. 26 trip to New Tripoli is circled on their calendar.

“We have some key returners,” Hall told the Sentinel at Wednesday’s Schuylkill County Football Coaches Association Media Day. “We’re fortunate in that situation. It’s one game at a time.”

Mengel is a three-year starter under center, Hall said. Running back and wideout Luke Miller is also returning, he said.

“Landon Smith was our third-most productive offensive football player,” Hall said. “Try to find ways to get him the football.”

A key loss, Hall said, is with the graduation of standout kicker Gavin Mentzer. The all-state selection nailed a 51-yard field goal for the Spartans last year.

“When you have a kicker like Gavin, your special teams become real easy,” Hall said. “Replacing him is a task. You’re not going to get a kicker like him. Very fortunate to have him when he was here.”

Mengel said the Spartans had a “really good summer.”

“We have a couple people we lost last year, but we filled those holes and everyone is just getting better every day,” Mengel said.
