Mahanoy City Rite Aid to close, company says in filing

MAHANOY CITY – The Mahanoy City Rite Aid location is set to close along with the Tamaqua location, according to bankruptcy filings.
The ailing pharmacy chain and the only chain with locations in northern Schuylkill County is in the midst of its second bankruptcy filing.
Rite Aid filed a list of 68 additional stores they plan to close, including the locations on Centre Street in Mahanoy City and Center Street in Tamaqua.
Northern Schuylkill was spared any closures in the original bankruptcy — the nearest were in Pottsville — though all locations will eventually be sold or closed in this bankruptcy.
In total, 44 locations in Pennsylvania were announced in the additional list of closures.
Rite Aid announced Thursday plans to sell pharmacy assets from more than 1,000 stores to various pharmacy chains, including CVS, Walgreens, Albertsons, Kroger, and Giant Eagle. A hearing to approve or deny that sale is set for May 21.
The company has not said specifically when the Mahanoy City or Tamaqua locations will close.
