Beaver Meadows man killed in Banks crash

BEAVER MEADOWS – A Beaver Meadows man was killed and a woman injured when they were struck by a car while riding bicycles in Banks Township Tuesday evening.

According to State Police at Hazleton, the crash happened 5pm on Spring Mountain Road just east of Route 93, not far from Beaver Meadows.

Troopers said Carol Furmanchin, 87, of Weatherly, was headed west on Spring Mountain Road in a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze.

Two bicyclists — a 30-year-old Beaver Meadows man whose name was not released, and Mayi Abreu Olga, 39, of Beaver Meadows — were riding bicycles in tandem westbound on Spring Mountain Road.

The sedan driven by Furmanchin struck the cyclists, throwing the riders off the bicycles.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by a Carbon County assistant coroner and Abreu Olga was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Hazleton with non-life threatening injuries.

Furmanchin was not injured and was wearing a seatbelt.

Troopers did not say if she would be cited for the crash.
