Hazleton man sentenced on federal drug charges

HAZLETON – A Hazleton man will spend the next 15 years in federal prison after authorities say he pleaded guilty to selling fentanyl and other drugs in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties.

Anthony Jordan Vega, 29, of Hazleton, was sentenced Tuesday to 188 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Vega was involved in a conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and other controlled substances between Jan. 22 until his arrest on April 20, 2023.

He managed a network of drug traffickers and co-conspirators, authorities said.

At the time of his arrest, he had 5,000 bags of fentanyl and other contraband hidden in a stash house in Hazleton.

Another man, Alex Hernandez, 25, of Hazleton, was also indicted and pleaded guilty to federal drug charges in July. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The charges stem from a joint investigation involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Scranton – Safe Streets Task Force, and the Pennsylvania State Police.  Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Olshefski prosecuted the case.
