Borough up-to-date on school taxes; Portnoff may collect delinquencies again
SHENANDOAH – Portnoff Law Associates may collect Shenandoah’s utility delinquencies after all, Borough Council President Joe Boris told the Shenandoah Municipal Sewer Authority Wednesday afternoon.
“Sewer, water, and trash will be being picked up by Portnoff now that we have everything squared away with the school,” Boris told the sewer authority.
Portnoff, based in Allentown, backed out of an April agreement to collect delinquencies owed to Shenandoah Borough over $47,350.56 owed by the borough to the Shenandoah Valley School District.
The debt represented back taxes owed on non-tax exempt properties owned by the borough, dating back to 2018.
Taxes on those properties had been paid to the county, leading the school district to believe the non-payment was not an oversight, Solicitor Robert Matta said at the October school board meeting.
The back taxes were paid on time as agreed by the borough and school district.
Boris said a new resolution will have to be passed by borough council.
At the regular meeting of council in September, the borough voted to pay the taxes and Borough Manager Tony Sajone accepted responsibility for the situation, though the delinquencies predate his employment.
